How VA Math Works

The VA doesn't simply add your ratings together. They use the "whole person theory" — each subsequent rating is applied to your remaining non-disabled percentage, not added on top.

This means two 50% ratings don't equal 100%. Understanding this is critical to knowing your true combined rating.

Why does this matter? A jump from 70% to 80% means an extra $293.70/month ($3,524.40/year). That's why identifying every condition — even "minor" ones — can dramatically increase your compensation.

Example: Two Conditions
1
Start with highest rating: 50%
You're 50% disabled, 50% ability remaining
2
Apply 30% to remaining 50%: 15%
30% × 50 = 15 additional points
3
Raw combined: 50 + 15 = 65%
Before rounding
Rounded to nearest 10%: 70%
