How the VA Rates Hip & Thigh Conditions

Hips are rated on thigh motion in several planes — flexion (raising the knee), extension, abduction (moving the leg outward), and rotation. Separate compensable limitations in different planes can be combined. Hip pain is also one of the most common secondary claims from knee and back conditions that alter your gait.

Evidence That Wins This Claim

  • An altered gait from knees or back is the classic nexus for secondary hip claims.
  • Multiple planes of motion can each be rated — make sure the examiner measures them all.

Common Questions

Is hip pain secondary to back pain a valid VA claim?

Yes — altered gait and mechanics from a service-connected back or knee condition commonly cause or aggravate hip pathology; a nexus letter connecting them supports secondary service connection.
