How the VA Rates Insomnia

Every mental health condition — PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic disorder and others — is rated under the same General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders (38 CFR § 4.130). The VA looks at your overall occupational and social impairment, not your diagnosis. The listed symptoms are examples, not a checklist: the rating should reflect the level your symptoms most closely approximate. Chronic sleep impairment is explicitly listed in the 30% criteria — insomnia is usually rated as (or folded into) a mental health condition, and one mental health rating covers all psychiatric symptoms together.

Evidence That Wins This Claim

  • A sleep study rules sleep apnea in or out — if apnea exists, that's a separate respiratory rating.
  • Document work impact from sleep deprivation: errors, missed shifts, safety issues.
  • Insomnia secondary to chronic pain or tinnitus is a recognized theory with a nexus opinion.

Common Questions

Is insomnia a standalone VA claim?

Yes — chronic insomnia can be service-connected and is rated under the mental disorders formula. If a sleep study shows apnea, that is claimed separately under DC 6847.
