How the VA Rates Migraines

Everything turns on the word “prostrating” — attacks that force you to stop and lie down in a dark room. The VA cannot require that you be unemployed for 50%; “severe economic inadaptability” means substantial work interference, like missed days and FMLA use.

Evidence That Wins This Claim

  • Keep a headache log: date, duration, whether you had to lie down, work missed.
  • Use the word 'prostrating' with your doctor so it appears in treatment notes.
  • FMLA paperwork and attendance records prove economic inadaptability for 50%.

Common Questions

What does 'prostrating' mean for VA migraines?

An attack severe enough that you must stop activity and rest — typically lying down in a dark, quiet room. Attacks you push through with medication may still qualify if you describe the full impact.

Do I need to be unemployed for the 50% migraine rating?

No. Courts have held 'severe economic inadaptability' does not require unemployment — documented substantial interference with work (missed days, FMLA, reduced duties) can suffice.
