How the VA Rates Scars

Every painful or unstable scar counts — surgical scars included. Add 10% to the evaluation if scars are both unstable AND painful. Scars are among the most under-claimed conditions: veterans with multiple service surgeries often leave an easy 10–30% unclaimed.

Evidence That Wins This Claim

  • Press on every scar at the exam and report tenderness honestly.
  • Count every surgical scar from service-connected operations.
