Ratings Prime
AI guide · instant answers 24/7The rating schedule stops at 100% — SMC doesn’t. For severe disabilities, monthly pay runs from an extra $139.87 all the way to $11,271.67/month in 2026.
Rates for a veteran alone. SMC-K adds ON TOP of your regular pay; the other levels REPLACE the standard 100% rate.
| Level | Who qualifies (plain English) | 2026 monthly |
|---|---|---|
| SMC-K | Added on top of any rating — loss or loss of use of a creative organ (e.g., ED), a hand, a foot, or an eye. | $139.87 |
| SMC-S | Housebound: one 100% rating PLUS a separate 60% — or medically confined to your home. | $4,408.53 |
| SMC-L | Loss of use of a hand/foot, blindness, or needing regular aid & attendance from another person. | $4,900.83 |
| SMC-L½ | Between L and M criteria. | $5,154.00 |
| SMC-M | Loss of use of two extremities, or blindness in both eyes. | $5,408.55 |
| SMC-M½ | Between M and N criteria. | $5,780.00 |
| SMC-N | More severe combinations of extremity loss. | $6,152.64 |
| SMC-N½ | Between N and O criteria. | $6,514.00 |
| SMC-O/P | The highest regular SMC level — multiple severe disability combinations. | $6,877.12 |
| SMC-R.1 | Needs daily aid & attendance from another person. | $9,826.88 |
| SMC-R.2/T | Needs a higher level of care — the maximum VA monthly payment. | $11,271.67 |
SMC-K is an automatic add-on — $139.87/month on top of any rating — most commonly for erectile dysfunction caused by service-connected conditions (diabetes, prostate issues) or their medications (blood pressure meds, antidepressants). The VA is supposed to grant it automatically. It is missed constantly. If this applies to you and it’s not on your award letter, you’re leaving $1,678 a year unclaimed.
If you have one condition rated 100% by itself PLUS separate conditions adding to 60%+, you qualify for SMC-S by statute — no proof of being housebound needed. That’s $4,408.53/month instead of $3,938.58. Check your own award letter: this exact combination gets overlooked.
The VA must consider SMC when the evidence shows entitlement — but in practice it’s frequently missed. Raise it explicitly in your claim or ask for it by name.
Yes — dependent add-ons stack on SMC rates the same way they do on regular compensation.
